Guidelines - Design For Test

  1. How Do I Plan for Change?
  2. What is a Muture Board Design?
  3. How Many Test Points Do I Need?

Plan for Change ...

Everything changes, including board designs.  Therefore it is a very good idea to allow 10% to 15% extra space (if at all possible) for future changes.  Planning for Change will cost less in inevitable ECOs and most importantly, production costs.

What is a Mature Board Design?

Before releasing your design to Production or for Test, make sure it is mature enough to "Freeze" the test access locations.  This means, design to keep your test points, vias, pads for SMT components or the mounting holes of through-hole components, in permanent locations.  Keep at least two permanent, non-plated tooling hole locations, preferably at opposite ends of the board and as far apart as possible.   Traces can move but the vias should not.  DO NOT cover test point vias or test pads with solder mask or conformal coating.

How Many Test Points Do I Need?

All electrical nets, including nets that connect IC pins but have no other components on them (Single Pin Nets), should have accessibility by using a test pad or via for SMT devices or by the component leads on through-hole devices.  All access should be from the Solder Side (bottom) whenever possible, for better reliability and less costs.
